A brief History of Dundee's European run

On 5th September 1961 Dundee F.C opened their European Cup campaign with one of the most memorable victories of any Scottish club over a German team, they thrashed Cologne 8-1.

The Scorers on that memorable night in front of a crowd of  25,000  were as follows----Hemmersbach og.----Wishart----Robertson----Gilzean 3----Smith----and Penman.

Dundee went down 4-0 in the second leg but the damage had already been done in the first, Dundee running out 8-5 winners

Alan Gilzean scores Dundee's third against Sporting

The photo above shows Alan Gilzean beating the diving Spoting Lisbon keeper Carvaiho with a low shot for Dundee's third goal in the 4-1 European Cup win at Dens, a game in which Gillie scored 3 and Cousin bagging the other.

Dundee were beaten 1-0 in the away leg but went through on a 4-2 aggregate score.




 

Penman heads home Dundee's sixth

The photograph below shows Dundee's Andy Penman heading past the Cologne keeper for their sixth goal in the memorable 8-1 triumph at Dens.

A game in which Alan Gilzean scored a hat trick.
