The League Winning Team of 62

Pictured above is the Dundee F.C team who won the Scottish first division championship in seasons 1961-62 and reached to the Europen Cup semi final in 1962 - 63.

The European Cup run must have taken too much out of the team because they finished in only 9th spot that season after winning the League the season before.

The players are (Back, left to right) Alex Hamilton, Bobby Seith, Ian Ure, Bert Slater, Bobby Wishart, Bobby Cox (captain).

Front - Sammy Kean (coach) Gordon Smith, Andy Penman, Alan Cousins, Alan Gilzean, Hugh Robertson and Bob Shankly (manager)

Pictured above is Gordon Smith

Gordon Smith had already won three championship medals with Hibs and distinguished himself with Hearts before becoming a Dundee player where he would have his swansong

The Hibs years - between 1941 and 1959 - were when Smith came to prominence, and had he not played another game after leaving Leith he would still be regarded as one of Scotland’s greatest ever players.

He continued his career at Hearts where he won another Championship medal and a league cup medal during season 1959 - 60, then, he starred for Dundee at the ripe old age of 37 in a gilded season where a league title was - given Smith’s presence - almost inevitably captured by three points from Rangers.

The following season in the unfogiving harshness of European football Smith inspired his team mates to a semi final spot against AC Milan.

The final of the European Cup was scheduled for Wembley but alas Dundee never made it going out on an aggregate score of  5 - 1.

"Gilzean used to say to him - ‘Look, The Gay, ( that was his nickname) just you cross the ball into the penalty box, and I’ll head it in and make you a player!’"

The reason being that Smith had stated that he was player when gillie was still in his nappies having scored a hat trick on his Hibs debut against Hearts
