Gordon Smith had already won three championship medals with Hibs and distinguished himself with Hearts before becoming a Dundee player where he would have his swansong
The Hibs years - between 1941 and 1959 - were when Smith came to prominence, and had he not played another game after leaving Leith he would still be regarded as one of Scotland’s greatest ever players.
He continued his career at Hearts where he won another Championship medal and a league cup medal during season 1959 - 60, then, he starred for Dundee at the ripe old age of 37 in a gilded season where a league title was - given Smith’s presence - almost inevitably captured by three points from Rangers.

The final of the European Cup was scheduled for Wembley but alas Dundee never made it going out on an aggregate score of 5 - 1.

The reason being that Smith had stated that he was player when gillie was still in his nappies having scored a hat trick on his Hibs debut against Hearts
